It was a hot day in July when three teams of men
challenged one another to the manly sport of Croquet: Robert Burns and David Benson; Charles Burns and John Durham; Chaz Burns and
Brandon Durham all set out, determined to poison the other teams' chances at the coveted prize of declaring "WE WON!"
Whoever won the tournament would be allowed to do "Victory Spins" the next day at the Nantahala River.
Though Charles and John leaped out to an early lead, they squandered it, sending David and Robert to the hinterlands of the croquet course. It was Brandon who made it around the course first, striking the pin to become "Poison." But he, too, squandred his lead, and Robert slid passed the others, leading his team to the pin.
David, using the unorthodox grip and style of "between the legs," grandpa'd his way around the terrain, after recovering from being "sent" into the Putt-Putt course. Robert was waiting at the last pin, poison himself, guarding
the position against other players. Against the odds, David slipped passed Brandon and Charles.
And the next day, Robert and David did victory spins down the Nantahala ... at least, until the last rapid. But that's another story.
